What Are Heat Pumps?

A heat pump is a device that transfers thermal energy from one location, called the “source,” with a lower temperature, to another location called the “sink”, that has a higher temperature. The heat pump basically uses a small amount of energy to move heat from one location to another. The way heat pumps operate is very similar to the way the air conditioners do.

When the heat pump operates to heat the building, it draws heat from the air or from the ground and pushes it to make the temperature inside warmer. It simply transfers heat
instead of burning fuel to create it. Heat pumps can also be used to cool down the building, without the need to install separate systems for heating and cooling.

There are several advantages in having a heat pump installed to heat and cool your building:

  • You don’t need to install separate systems for heating and cooling.
  • Heat pump saves you energy.
  • You are going green, since you are not burning gas.

Heat pumps are usually used in moderate climates, and they are more energy officiant than gas burning furnaces.

Heat pumps are not only used to heat and cool the buildings, but also to heat pools, hot tubs, etc.
